Yoga and I met during my first pregnancy. Being a little nervous about child birth and the journey into Motherhood I wanted to learn more about the breath as a tool, and to feel connected to my body.
So I signed up to a local studio for Pre-Natal Yoga classes.
Our teacher was also pregnant, her qualities both nurturing and oh so fierce. I instantly felt a connection with her. She encouraged us in a deeply supportive way to hold our postures for longer periods of time; feeling everything and breathing through it all - the challenge, the discomfort, the urge to run away. Her words directing us to connect with our inner fire, our courage and our will, all while remaining steady. It wasn’t long until I felt fierce too. What I noticed over time is that the story I had written for myself shifted and changed; my thoughts and feelings about this approaching new way of life did the same.
As I entered into the early years of being a stay at home mum, Yoga is what supported me. I developed a committed home practice and would sit in meditation before the house awoke. I felt deeply drawn to the aspect of self study ’Svadhyaya’ and was intrigued by Yoga’s ability to connect to different aspects of myself, some that had been forgotten, and its ability to not only change the story but shine the light on what’s real, what’s true.
I felt a deeper pull to learn more so I enrolled into my first 200hr Yoga Teacher Training and started teaching as soon as we graduated; that was to be the first of many trainings ahead.
What I’ve learnt through my journey is that Yoga in its totality is the way I relate to the world around me. It’s how I discern what it means to experience life and everything we go through in this existence, connecting to all the aspects of myself that I need to draw on the stay balance and most importantly, allowing me to rewrite the story over and over again to one that continues to feel deeply true.
