Yoga Teachers Support Group: The Missing Link in the Wellness Industry
Apr 15, 2026
The yoga industry has grown into a global movement - one that promotes mindfulness, healing, and connection. Yet behind many of the teachers, there’s an often-overlooked reality: yoga teachers themselves frequently lack structured emotional, professional, and community support.
I’ve spoken to many teachers, and this seems especially common among those who are new. After completing their 200-hour or Level 1 YTT, they set out in search of a meaningful new career. But along the way, it can become quite lonely and isolated. Here’s some of what has come up in more recent conversations:
For some, caring for others becomes a central part of the role. Their attention is often directed outward - reading the room, supporting students, and holding space - and this can quietly become the default, even off the mat.
There can also be a subtle belief that being a “good” teacher means always being available, calm, and selfless. At times, this can lead to personal needs being placed to one side and boundaries getting muddy. Some find that staying busy holding space for others can act as a distraction from sitting with their own thoughts, emotions, or discomfort.
Without a consistent teacher to guide them, some say that a regular self-practice can become inconsistent, or even fall away entirely. This can leave some feeling uninspired, disconnected, or lacking a sense of devotion.
For others, the devotional aspect of the practice can fade over time without community. It’s easy to get pulled back into the demands of daily life, and to forget that the practice extends beyond the mat.
It's also not uncommon for teachers to quietly navigate burnout and emotional fatigue, financial instability, isolation, imposter syndrome and self-doubt and pressure to embody “having it all together” in both practice and life.
Many have said that they would benefit from additional support in areas like sequencing classes, weaving in philosophy in a way that feels authentic, and exploring language to communicate more clearly, confidently and in a trauma informed way.
Unlike many professions, yoga teaching often lacks accessible mentorship structures or peer networks. There’s no built-in system for debriefing after a difficult class, discussing ethical dilemmas, or simply being vulnerable.
Why Support Groups Are the Missing Link
The wellness industry emphasizes self-care, but sometimes, its own practitioners, unless they have a dedicated and devotional practice and/or a teacher or mentor, miss this essential part of being a teacher - support. A yoga teachers support group fills this gap by creating a dedicated space for teachers to:
- Be held, not just hold space. Teachers spend hours supporting others emotionally and physically. A support group allows them to step out of the “teacher role” and be human - sharing struggles, challenges and wins with like minded community.
- Hearing “me too” from other teachers can be profoundly validating. It reduces feelings of isolation and helps individuals realize that challenges are part of the journey, not personal failures.
- Support groups can provide tools, conversations, and boundaries that help teachers build long-term, sustainable careers. Beyond emotional support, these groups have become hubs for sharing teaching techniques (such as sequencing, weaving philosophy, developing language and teaching through a trauma informed lens)
When teachers are supported, they show up better - for their students, their communities, and themselves. This creates a ripple effect that elevates the integrity and impact of yoga.
Teacher trainings often end with certification, but not with a solid community continuity that lasts the distance of a steady teaching career. A yoga teachers support group is a necessary evolution. Because when teachers are supported, the entire practice of yoga becomes more authentic, more sustainable, and more human.
And that’s what yoga was always meant to be.
What Our AYTT Support Group Offers
A place to be human
We spend so much time holding space. This is a group where we get to step out of that role and just be ourselves - honest, messy and real.
That reminder we are not alone
There’s something powerful about hearing someone else say exactly what you’ve been thinking. It reminds you you’re not alone, and that what you’re going through is part of the path - not a personal failure.
Sustainability
So many great teachers burn out and leave. Not because they don’t love yoga, but because they’re doing it alone. Support creates longevity.
Growth beyond the mat
These spaces naturally become places where we share ideas, talk through challenges, and learn from each other - not just as teachers, but as people navigating this work. Each quarter we dive into a theme. Some examples are “Developing Strength in Sequencing”, “Weaving Philosophy" and “Diversifying Language”.
When Teachers Are Supported, Everything Changes
When we feel supported, we show up differently. We’re more present. More grounded. More authentic. And that ripples out into every class, every student, every space we’re part of.
You are welcome to sit with us in a circle once a month (virtually via Zoom) to meet online with teachers from different places, gathering as peers, without hierarchy, being guided by Darci - an experienced, non-dogmatic, open and relatable human - who will share her experience with you in a way that will have you briskly taking her off any pedestal.
Yoga is about connection. Union. Relationship. When we’re supported, the way we teach changes. It becomes more real. More sustainable. More human. And to me, that’s what yoga has always been about.
